Vulvar lichen sclerosus (VLS) is a chronic inflammatory disease that primarily affects the skin and mucous membranes of the anogenital region, significantly impacting patients' quality of life.
The standard treatment currently prescribed involves potent topical corticosteroids, the prolonged use of which may pose several risks, including skin atrophy. Additionally, due to the chronic nature of VLS, recurrence is common after treatment has ended.
A randomised double-blind placebo-controlled study, carried out at the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit of the IRCCS Policlinico San Martino in Genoa (Italy), was conducted on 100 women with VLS to evaluate the efficacy of ALYVAL REGENERA on this pathology in the long term (36 weeks) following a 12-week course of topical corticosteroids.
The primary efficacy endpoint is relapse rate, while the secondary endpoint is mean time to relapse. In addition to the subjective assessment of symptoms such as itching, burning and dyspareunia asked of the patients, objective evaluations of clinical signs such as erythema, leucoderma, sclerosis and hyperkeratosis were performed.

63 patients completed the first 3 months of maintenance therapy with daily application (31 study group, 32 control group). The group treated with ALYVAL REGENERA reported higher satisfaction than the control group (61.3% vs 25.0%; p=0.004) and a significantly lower recurrence rate (12.5% vs 29.0%; p=0.04).

In patients treated with ALYAVL REGENERA, there is a lower incidence of subjective symptoms (itching, burning and dyspareunia) compared to the control group. Additionally, a reduced incidence of hyperkeratosis (an objective parameter) is observed, on average almost halved compared to the placebo group.
